Avenues to Advancement                                                             

Avenues to Advancement is a work skills program geared towards Ontario Works recipients who are experiencing difficulty gaining or maintaining employment.  The goal of this program is to help individuals gain the skill they need to pursue employment, training and/or education goals. The ten weeks is broken down into two half day workshops every week (Monday and Wednesday 9:30am – 12:30pm) with two days set aside for customized activities and one day for a one on one meeting with the employment specialist every week (or as needed) to work on each individual's specified action plan.


The Avenues to Advancement program can have a variety of outcomes and because of that the workshops are geared towards not only employment, but education and training avenues as well.  Throughout the program the students will gain knowledge in the following areas: 

  • Career Exploration
  • Cover letter/ Resume Development
  • Employability Skills
  • Hidden/ Advertised Job Market
  • Networking and Outreach
  • Labour Market Information/ Job Trends
  • Workplace Expectations/ Standards
  • Computer Basics
  • Professionalism
  • Job Search/ Interview Skills

Individual Action Plans

Throughout the course each student will develop an action plan geared towards their specific goal(s). With the assistance of the employment specialist, participants will identify strategies to overcome major barriers to employment. The individual action plan will be updated on an ongoing basis as each student completes their customized activities to get them closer to their goal.

Post Program

Following the ten week in class program, each student will be offered support for up to six months if their goal is education/training and twelve months if their goal is employment.  This support can be offered on a weekly or bi-weekly basis depending on the level of support required or desired.
